  3. Yeaaahhh!!! I’m so glad of the renewal I’m still going to write letters of appreciation to NBC, and next season to all the sponsors, early on. In hopes of getting the back 9.. we won the battle but not the war. we need to see at least a season 6!!!

  4. Awesome!
    Great for the renewal.
Great we can can see more Yvonne on the big screen.
It’s a great day to be alive.

  5. Reducing ‘Chucks’ production costs is a no-brainer. Eliminating the ENTIRE Buy More cast should take care of quite a bit of production costs.

So glad to see Agent Walker will be back. I need my weekly fix of Yvonne Strahovski.

    Comment by Rusty B. — May 18, 2009 @ 9:26 am

  6. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that Yvonne Strahovski is not in danger of getting the boot.

LOL. You do not need to go out on a limb. It should be considered an obvious fact already.

Now everyone needs to work hard to get those Nielsen families to watch so that we can have our back-9 + more seasons, without having to do another “Save Chuck” campaign.

Ah yes, the world is in a better place now that we know Yvonne Strahovski will be back on our small scenes on a weekly basis.

And let’s hope those 3 movies will eventually be available for everyone to see.

  7. What great news!!

I expect we’ll get 22 episodes of Chuck :-) as NBC will probably run them on Sci Fi if they make the mistake of only running 13 on NBC.

Happy to see NBC FINALLY got one right!

More Yvonne, how can my day get any better

    Comment by Mike — May 18, 2009 @ 10:32 am

  8. @bzzg Ha. Yah that was meant as semi-sarcastic. I’m pretty sure there would be no hope of Chuck staying on the air of they yanked Yvonne.

Hopefully they get a back-9 pickup. I’m hoping that the change of day will help with that (depending on the day).

But also, they may not expect as much out of it if it costs less and airs on a night with lower expectations.

  9. Thanks for setting that one straight. I was about to say “no risk… You can continue to hug the tree trunk real tight Lykaon.

I feel the deep seated need take more action somehow to keep this from happening again. Its not agood time to rest but I’m not sure what else to do at this point beyond the “thank you” notes.

  10. @Lykaon, oh yea, I was well awared there was some sarcasm in that. But I was trying to poke fun at you, and apparently, I failed.

I kind of cringed about Chuck being on Fridays. There’s slightly a lesser chance the show could be a real hit, beside a plain Friday hit.

  13. Fox announced the start dates for all of its shows today, including both the fall and spring schedules. I’m hoping NBC does the same thing tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

  14. the stars have finally aligned!…lol…awesome news that it’s 99.9% confirmed for s3…but i’ll save my full-blwon excitement for tomorrow ;)

it’s a little unsettling to hear the rumors of staff writer cuts and less supporting actors/actresses scenes :( …i hope they don’t do anything drastic like axing the buy more gang…i know some people hate them but i feel like the show wouldn’t have the same charisma/comedy without jeffster, morgan, big mike or anna

like just hope the possible friday time slot won’t become a death spot for CHUCK…we need to improve viewership and the promoting/advertising quality…we shouldn’t think that CHUCK’s running it’s final course, since it seems like all networks are cutting budgets for their shows…i hope we’ll hear from the cast after the official renewal announcement :D

  15. That was some REALLY GOOD NEWS!!!!!!

  17. The ball is still in our court. We’ve got season three, now we have to work like zealots to spread the word over the summer. Keep sharing those DVD’s with potential viewers. We need to talk it up. Because CHUCK is going to another nite (most likely Friday) we have the opportunity to see it competing against lesser shows. No slot could possibly be as bad as Monday at 8. It’s time for the door to door campaign (figuratively)! Unleash the Casey!

    What a GREAT day!!!

  20. My opinion on the budget cuts is that maybe it will make the writers of the show re-think what its strengths are. I don’t think the big action scenes and explosions are really the strength of the show. I think character development is a strength of the show and not enought time is spent on the main Charah plot. They are always being interupted. I’d like to see Charah spend more time during the show just doing some simple stuff like go on a date or hang out with ellie. Keep the comedy alive and not so many special effects IMO.

  26. With Morgan and Anna Heading over to Hawaii, it would seem that the producers were on track to write the Buymore out of the script. That reduces the title cast by 5. While I will miss the Buymore subplots I suspect Ellie and Awesome will fill that void. Now if one assumes that the Buymore crew was getting $40,000 and episode that’s a saving of 4.5 million right of the bar.

NBC RENEWS POPULAR ACTION-COMEDY ‘CHUCK’ FOR THE 2009-2010 SEASON WITH SUBWAY AS MAJOR SPONSOR
    Published: May 19, 2009

Innovative Advertising Partnership With Subway Validates NBC’s Early “Infront” Process

Renewal Represents Triumph for Fans and TV Critics Who Waged Successful Online and Twitter “Save Chuck” Campaign Supported by Subway

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – May 19, 2009 – NBC is pleased to announce that due to an innovative advertising partnership with Subway, the fan-favorite and critically-lauded series “Chuck” will return for the 2009-10 season. The announcement was made by Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, and Mike Pilot, President, Sales and Marketing, NBC Universal.

“This innovative partnership is a perfect example of the effectiveness of the NBC Infront,” said Silverman. “By involving Subway early in the process, we were able to bring a quality show like ‘Chuck’ back to NBC for next season. Everybody wins — NBC, Subway, and the loyal fans who so enthusiastically lobbied for ‘Chuck’s’ renewal.”

“The synergy of the deal with Subway validates the Infront process,” added Pilot. “Our goal with the Infront is to initiate early and ongoing dialogue with our advertising clients regarding the network’s programming. We were thrilled when Subway, who had been integrated into the show lately, expressed a desire to expand their relationship with the series in a creative way.”

“Our customers love ‘Chuck’ so we are happy to help bring the show back through our partnership with NBC,” said Tony Pace, Chief Marketing Officer, SFAFT. “We have been working with NBC Universal extensively, well beyond the traditional upfront marketplace discussions, to craft ground-breaking, multi-platform deals, which we believe provide a more engaging way of getting our messages to our consumer audiences. And, since program development is essentially year round, we have found NBC’s Infront process to be helpful in that we can be part of the conversation as programming decisions are made.”

The multi-platform partnership with Subway will offer a variety of opportunities that will include significant integration into the show, as well as traditional advertising tie-ins.

“Chuck” has been heralded by TV Guide as classic TV escapism — a funny, smart, stylish, silly action comedy, a hoot with heart, pure entertainment that mixes danger, humor and romance in a satisfying package.”

In its second season, “Chuck” averaged a 2.8 rating, 7 share in adults 18-49 and 7.3 million viewers overall in a highly competitive time period that includes competition from Fox’s “House,” ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” and CBS’s “Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother.” “Chuck” over-delivered in upscale households, scoring a 115 index of adults 18-49 living in homes with $75,000+ incomes (with 100 representing an average concentration of those homes in the general 18-49 population) and generated 28 percent of its adult 18-49 audience through DVR time-shifting. The February 2 “3-D” episode of “Chuck” (3.0 rating, 7 share in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall) nabbed NBC’s highest non-Olympic 18-49 rating in the time period since February 25, 2008.

From executive producer, Josh Schwartz (“The O.C.”) and executive producer-director McG (“Charlie’s Angels,” “We Are Marshall”), the one-hour, action-comedy series follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, “Less Than Perfect”) — a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government’s most vital secret agent. When Chuck opens an e-mail subliminally encoded with government secrets, he unwittingly downloads an entire server of sensitive data into his brain. Now, the fate of the world lies in the unlikely hands of a guy who works at a Buy More Electronics store. Instead of fighting computer viruses, he must now confront assassins and international terrorists.

With the government’s most precious secrets in Chuck’s head, Major John Casey of the National Security Agency (Adam Baldwin, “My Bodyguard”) assumes the responsibility of protecting him. His partner is the CIA’s top agent (and Chuck’s first date in years), Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski, “Gone”). They’ll try to keep him safe by trading in his pocket protector for a bulletproof vest. Also starring are Joshua Gomez (“Without a Trace”) as Morgan Grimes, Chuck’s best buddy, and Sarah Lancaster (“What About Brian?”) as Chuck’s ever-supportive sister, Ellie. Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak wrote, “Chuck,” which is produced by College Hill Pictures, Wonderland Sound and Vision, in association with Warner Bros. Television.

  32. Am I the only one who (maybe) doesn’t want to see chuck RUINED? Maybe rather just see it end gracefully or find a new network rather than be on NBC, where chuck will now be stripped down & with all these stipulations & limitations? Great that it is back, but it sounds like it won’t be the same.

Sounds like Subway really saved the day & perhaps single handedly kept chuck alive. HOWEVER, this means subway is going to want extreme product placement. All characters will probably have subway tatoo’s, talk about subway every episode, Sarah will probably work in a Subway now. The show will probably be renamed to “Subway”. It might basically be an hour long subway commercial!

While its great that subway is supporting Chuck so much, lets face it, Subway is a big corporation, & in the end its all about $$$. I already thought the product placement during chuck was getting a bit gratuitous this past season nearly to where it starts to interfere with the show. So I’m not too excited about even more of this going on.

All the characters and subplots are one thing that makes chuck great, unique. But with the announcement of character/actor’s having reduced roles or eliminated entirely, needless to say, that is going to suck.
Chuck/Sarah not being on screen for the full hour is what makes the time they are on more special. The subplots and other characters are what really allow the writers to take their time with chuck/sarah and their storylines, giving us only the best. There is no fat to trim there, but this upcoming season, there might be.
Just like a relationship, the less time you spend with somebody you like, the better the quality of the time you do have. I want that quality time, not just quantity with less substance.

It just doesn’t sound good with all the cuts. Writers being cut, actors being cut, number of shows being cut, budget being cut.
With a show this great, going forward with it half assed is just giving it a slow & painful death. Oh, and we won’t even see it until nearly a year from now! I’m a pretty diehard fan, but even I will barely remember the final episodes from this past season by the time chuck rolls around again. By that time I might not even care anymore. I will definitely watch, but not much will be fresh in my mind in regards to this past season. And I’m not the type who has the time or willingness to rewatch old episodes just to refresh. I’m a one and done kinda guy, I can dedicate an hour a week to chuck since its about the only real show that I watch, but that’s about it.

I feel this is also going to be the issue with most fans like myself, as well whatever casual fans the show picked up recently. It’s a totally different story if we are picking up again in a few months, but march of 2010 is too damn long for me, and most. By then the entire campaign to save chuck will be forgotten by most as well.
Only the diehards like many of you might be able to shrug this stuff off. And considering chuck needs to keep whatever fans that it can, this just isn’t good news. Needless to say, picking up new fans under these circumstances just isn’t gonna happen either. I really worry about how many people will tune in for s03e01, especially for a show that is now relying on a continued storyline from seasons passed. Not easy to grab new fans in the middle of a series during a break this long.

While many of you are happy with this news that “at least chuck will be back on some level”, I’m just not that optimistic.
My hopes were that either chuck comes back full throttle, or not at all & hope it can find a new home where it is fully supported by its network that doesn’t need to rely on a huge sponsor and complaining fans just to keep it going. Guaranteed some networks would benefit huge by having Chuck, and would treat the show right, and genuinely want it on the air no matter what. I’d love to see a better time slot for it as well, I think that is a huge deal. These days 8PM is just too early to settle down for most of us folks in the younger demo.

Lastly, in regards to miss Strahotski, I don’t blame her one bit for trying to take whatever other jobs she can get, hearing that she’s got a couple more movies in the works. I’d do the same thing if I were on a show that was half assed backed by the network, only 13 more guaranteed episodes on a show that just might not be the same, might not see a season 4. Nobody has to tell me how great the show is, and I’ll watch and support as long as it is on.
But let’s not be surprised if things do go downhill, or even if Strahotski does move on, soon.

Hoping for the best in 2010, but staying in reality as well.

    Comment by robx46 — May 19, 2009 @ 9:27 pm

  33. robx46, you might want to check the latest news. They’re not cutting the budget after all. And NBC has plans to promote the show during the fall (via online content) and the Olympics (via TV ads, etc.).

You may still not be happy with the rest of it: the delay, the Subway tie-in, etc., but it was that or nothing.

Also, you do realize that Yvonne’s stage surname is Strahovski, right? Strahotski is the name of this web site.

    Comment by Scott — May 20, 2009 @ 12:40 am

  34. robx46

The product integration won’t be THAT extreme like you mentioned. That would be overkill. I’m sure the writers will find a way to add Subway into their script without making it seem like a commercial.

Also Toyota was one of the sponsors. The only time you saw those were when there were moments Chuck or the other cast used the Herders.

March 2010 isn’t that LONG. [It only means more time to promote to friends and get them hooked onto the show as well & It won't be going against Heroes.]
If you really think about it. I’ve waited for other things that were quite LONGER but the wait was worth it.

    Comment by Jason — May 20, 2009 @ 2:04 am

  35. Yeah I know her real surname, of course its more fun to use Strahotski, that’s even her nickname on set. In fact, her surname isn’t even Strahovski, its a longer, harder to pronounce version of that.

Anyhow, the way I work is that I expect the worst, that way it doesn’t take as much to lift my spirits. I stated a lot of worst case scenario’s, I know. But the truth is that chuck is being cut back in one way or another, even if its just the # of shows.
Hey, I’m gonna be a fan for as long as the show stays good and doesn’t lose any key characters like strahotski. It wouldn’t be “Chuck” without her. My concern lies with many of the “on the fence” or casual fans.
Will they be able to wait til next spring and still be interested, want to tune in?
If not, we won’t see a 4th season, for sure.

But let me give a little optimism. I think NBC’s fall lineup sucks, I like the thursday night lineup, but they couldn’t even leave that one alone giving Earl the shaft. My 3 favorite 1hr shows, Chuck being #1, have all got the shaft to some extent. I also like Heroes, but we’ll only be seeing 13 ep’s of that one, and Friday Night Lights, another fav, is just going to be a summer fling again & air on directv 1st. 1st class shows, IMO, not getting 1st class treatment.

I predict NBC will learn the hard way. SERIOUSLY, who wants to watch Leno at 10pm EVERY SINGLE NIGHT for an hour? Does anybody really even care to keep watching him, or was the tonight show just something to have on for people to fall asleep to? I’m glad Conan is taking that one over, but still has to follow jay.

Leno himself might even burnout faster than we burnout on him. SERIOUSLY, late night talk show format from 10pm until 2am minus 1/2 hour for news? Nearly 4 hours of late night? 4 straight talk shows? Nobody liked Leno at 11:30, he destroyed the tonight show with lengthy monologues that are as predictable as hell, never even so much as chuckled at a Leno choke, I mean joke, my whole life!
Its almost like watching a rerun every night, jokes are always the same, just told differently to reflect the popular news stories of the day.
People would put up with it at 11:30 considering nothing else is on, but at 10pm, I predict a massive bomb coming.

If Leno doesn’t pan out (which its only a matter of time before the show bombs or he has to check back into a hospital again), then that opens up 5 hours of prime time programming every week.
That could mean great news for Chuck and more worthwhile shows getting more ep’s.
Then of course I’m sure we’ll see most or all of the new series’ fail, as usual, again possibly opening doors for the stuff people really like.

What I’m saying is that there is some hope in that the fall lineup plan ends up not panning out, and although shows like Chuck maybe didn’t get huge ratings all the time, they know its a solid standby if they end up with some extra airtime to fill. NBC knows its got a super fanbase, critics love it, its like an old trusty horse despite only being on 2 seasons.

Not that I’m an expert on how TV really works, I just know that every year there are failures, and maybe that is what we should hope for. Maybe once people see how crappy Leno’s show is, and a couple of the new shows, then NBC will realize just how nice it is to have shows like Chuck and maybe not take them for granted anymore.

    Comment by robx46 — May 20, 2009 @ 8:36 pm

  36. What. the. hell. I have to wait until March to get more Chuck? Kill me now. I realize any Chuck is better than no Chuck at all, but sometimes I wish this show had the good fortune to be on a better network. NBC has so much talent between the producers, writers, and actors on its shows (see FNL, Office, 30 Rock, etc.) yet they come in last routinely. Considering they get outplayed by reality shows, the network is clearly failing to grab viewer attention through idiotic marketing campaigns. A special Chuck should have aired immediately following the Super Bowl this year, not Heroes (which should be abandoned as its Season 1 popularity is long gone and its quality is highly inferior to Chuck). Earl and Parks are two wholly unfunny shows. Five seconds of John Casey, Jeffster, Chuck, or Awesome provide more laughs than an hour of those two combined. And Chuck isn’t a pure sit-com! Damn NBC… Chuck deserves so much better.

    Comment by TDL1234 — May 21, 2009 @ 3:06 am

  37. Anybody who is wishing for NBC shows to fail in the fall so that Chuck is suddenly inserted somewhere randomly in the fall line up has not thought this over very carefully at all.

Chuck is currently in position to be promoted through the entire olympics and then be the first show on NBC after the olympics.

Randomly inserting Chuck somewhere in the fall line up because show ‘x’ really sucked and failed miserably IS NOT GOING TO HELP CHUCK AT ALL BUT WILL BE A DEATH BLOW. People will have no warning that it is even on and no advertising event ahead of time to take advantage of. Chuck will just appear suddenly out of the blue in a time slot which has failed.

Chuck will receive exactly ZERO advertising of any kind until the olympics. To suddenly have the show pop out of nowhere randomly onto the fall schedule in a failed timeslot is a bad idea.

NBC WILL advertise this show more extensively than ever before during the olympics because the show with it’s new subway integration is making them MONEY and MONEY TALKS.

Josh Schwartz chose this time slot over Fridays in the fall because he thinks it will work better. Smart money is on Josh knowing what he is talking about.

Anyway I just want to clear this up because I think people need to remember that the big picture is to advertise chuck ahead of time and then get people to watch it. Not to sacrifice all that just to get the show aired a few weeks earlier.

    Comment by dave — May 21, 2009 @ 12:52 pm

  38. Dave, you have a valid point about the advertising, but the interviews with Schwartz suggest that it was NBC who made the scheduling decision. Still, if we have to wait until March, what better way to lead into it than with a promotional effort during the Olympics?

    Comment by Scott — May 21, 2009 @ 1:03 pm

  39. Yeah, tru dat in regards to olympics advertising, ASSUMING that chuck will be at or near the top of their agenda as far as promotion. But you know how NBC likes to plug the crap out of their new shows though.
So maybe the olympics will help, but to be honest, I hardly watch any olympics at all and don’t really know anybody else that does either, aside from the select few popular events.
I’m also gonna assume that the winter olympics don’t grab the same ratings that the summer ones do south of the canadian border.

You also hope chuck gets its ads during events more so than commercials. With everybody and their mother having DVR’s, who watches commercials anyhow? I haven’t watched one in months!

I think monday is a good time slot (considering that there is no way chuck would infiltrate the thursday night comedy shows), I just wish it were at 9pm. 8pm is more for family oriented shows, chuck has the sexuality and voilence (which I love, btw). Maybe at 9pm they could get away with more along those lines.

So yeah, 8pm, many adults with kids that would love to watch chuck probably can’t tune in yet. I know when I was a tot, I was able to watch 8pm TV, but come 9pm, it was bedtime for me and my folks would watch their stuff.
Of course we do have DVR’s these days, but I think the problem is that a lot of people that would love chuck dont even know they would like it, or just never think to give it a chance.
Following all this buzz in the past weeks I bet it peaked curiousity in a lot of people as to why so many people want to save the show, but unfortunately has been done for a few weeks now.

Anyhow, all we can do is hope that NBC (and all of us) get the buzz going for chuck a good couple months ahead of time.
And while I hate waiting until march & only 13 episodes, getting a back following that would help make up for the wait. I wonder how that happens. If more shows are added, wouldn’t they make the decision afer chuck starts to air (being able to see the ratings)? If so, I wonder how they have enough time (heads up) to make more ep’s.
Yeah, definitely curious as to when we might know whether we get more than 13 or not.

Lastly, I wonder if Chuck (in the interim) could do some online stuff. Some online shorties or spinoff’s for supporting characters. Something to keep chuck on brains during this long wait and pacify diehards.

    Comment by robx46 — May 22, 2009 @ 12:47 am

  40. I think 8:00 is a great time for Chuck, my kids watch it, they are 10 and 14 and they always have a laugh. Any kids younger than that really wont get it anyway or even care.

I appears that there will be more online stuff (webisodes, etc) done to fill in the gap until the Season 3 premiere.

Also, there is always a chance that when a new shows tanks, and they will, Chuck could conceivably start earlier.

  41. Well, apparantly Yvonne is under contract with NBC for 6 years, so as long as there are episodes to be made, she will be there. As for her doing other work, good for her, she deserves more recognition because she is an incredible actor. I would personally prefer to see her on TV every week rather than only occasionally during the year in movies though, I know its selfish but thats how I feel.

  42. I am just so grateful that we have gotten more Chuck. I know there are a bunch of folks complaining about the subway/Chuck product placement but for all I care if every time Yvonne got done to her skimpy underthings, the back of her panties had a huge Subway logo across the them, I would be fine with that if it means more Chuck. (Of course I am fine with that type of scenario no matter what).

  43. This is fantastic, awesome, that Chuck has been renewed, however, no fall episodes is terrible.

No Thanksgiving or Dec. Christmas/holiday show?
    No sweet potatoes and marshmallows?
Morgan shd stay, IMO, because he provides part of the comedy between Chuck, Sarah, Ellie, etc.

We all can start another campaign to have a few episodes in the fall, such as 4 or 5, to fill-in after one of the new shows tanks.

It is still great Chuck was renewed and we can look forward to 13 or more shows. Thanks also for the news about NBC having signed Yvonne for 6 years.

  44. Yvonne was originally signed for 6 years when the show first started, so she now has roughly 4 years left, depending on when she actually signed.

  45. I have to agree with robx46. I’m happy for 13 more episodes but the placement of the 13 episodes of Chuck in March 2010 effectively kills any momentum the show has built. What Chuck needs is more casual viewers as well as hardcore fans. Chuck isn’t Lost or the Sopranos and I don’t think it can withstand a full 10 months of not being out there in the schedule.

  48. So will Sarah be working at Subway for her cover in Season 3?

  49. Not a huge problem with Sarah working at a Subway, if that’s what it takes to keep the show on. Just purchased my Chuck season 1 DVD’s to help hold me over. Let’s just be happy that a show we all love was actually renewed. Better that it comes in March than getting interupted by the Olympics.
