Strahovski and Wedding Planners

by Lykaon - April 18th, 2011

I know I’m still behind from having missed last week. I haven’t written a review, but I did manage to get it under my belt so I’m properly educated for this week’s episode.

I’m not sure I’ll really need the Volkoff stuff for this week, though.  It looks like a nice standalone episode with the awesomely funny Gary Cole back as Mr. Sarah’s Dad.

Less talk, more review.  It’s time for the review of Episode 4.21 – Chuck Versus the Wedding Planner.

This episode was awesome.  I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Chuck works best when its plots are standalone with nothing but character arcs.  When it gets weighed down with big story arcs, it can’t afford to be as light-hearted as an episode like this one.

Chuck is a comedy first in my opinion.  This episodes proves it and then some.  It took our characters and put them in a silly situation then let us watch as they wiggled their way out of it.  In the meantime, we get some serious character development from Sarah and her dad.

Though it was mostly comedy, it was really great getting some backstory on Sarah.  It’s so rare that Sarah gets to be the center of an episode.  The little actress who played a young Sarah also did a pretty good job and looked believably like Yvonne Strahovski.

Yvonne Strahovski had some legendary moments in this episode. I loved Sarah’s “flash face.” Every time I think we’ve seen Sarah Walker at her silliest, she comes back with something even funnier. Yvonne Strahovski must have had a great time trying to make that face.

Then she wows us with her accent when she takes over the ballroom.  But not to be outdone by herself, Sarah Walker establishes herself as a master cake decorator.  Oh the things you learn in the CIA.

Jack is one of the best guest characters that has ever been written into the show. Not only that, but Gary Cole also delivers the character to maximum effect.  I love the complex relationship he has with his daughter, and they both play off of each other well.  I also love the continuity with Jack calling Casey “copface” again.

Never before have we seen so deep into the Sarah Walker mythos, and never has her character been advanced so well. It’s a feat of writing that has been four seasons in the making. It’s well overdue.

And somehow, the writers managed to squeeze in some really great development on the Casey front.  It was a great reunion with his old wife; touching amidst the inanity of the wedding and hunt for the Zephyr.

I also liked Morgan in this episode.  He’s the sidekick; he should be playing a support role and he did so in this episode without being too much of a screen (or joke) hog. I also liked him apologizing to Casey there at the end. It’s a subtle nod to the deep relationship that has formed between the two.

I know a lot of people like the spy stuff and the action, but I much prefer it as the MacGuffin to further the Bartowski universe and develop its characters. I don’t care about the Zephyr. It just doesn’t matter. What matters is that Sarah and her dad had some moments, Casey is on the road to recovery with his former wife, and Chuck & Sarah are still the solid couple they were to start with.

It was an excellent episode that should serve as a template for more episodes. It’s the sort of episode that has the capacity to really draw in new viewers who are flipping through the channels. There’s no confusion or necessary prerequisites to enjoy the heart and comedy.

Also. Long live Chicken Pepperoni! What did you guys think?

I really enjoyed this episode, the writers did a great job and the characters pulled it off. I liked Awesome with the tells. I laughed many times and especially enjoyed the end with the piggy bank! Yvonne has so many directions she takes a character. Her on-screen Dad is proud of her just think what it must be to be her actual parents to be so proud!!

great episode! Yvonne was amazing as always. I really liked getting some more development & backstory in the Sarah/Jack relationship. can’t wait for the next episode!!

“You’re a hero. You’re a soldier. You have everything you ever wanted.” ~ Kathleen (paraphrased)

That one line really drove home Casey’s character arc. He DOES have everything he’s ever wanted . . . except Kathleen.

Props to Adam Baldwin and Kathleen’s actress for a powerful scene.

You nailed it, Lykaon. Probably the most depth in an episode in quite a while. Yvonne and Gary Coleman have great chemistry. I agree with you completely about the stand alone episodes with the characters carrying the story being the most effective. I’ll watch this one over and over.

This was classic Chuck. I laughed out loud many times – great for the soul after a hard day at work! (dancing with the stars never can do that!)The continuity between previous episodes was not lost by the writers or Chuck fans.

If Chuck was not constantly on the bubble, who knows how much better the show could be. The writers/cast and crew have had to constantly scramble with constant season switches in the length of the season and not being able to know when the plug will be pulled certainly can have an impact on the stories. Having said that Chuck still can pull it off and that is of course due to the talents of the cast. Story arcs can make it difficult for new watchers to catch on but these one-offs are a boon to help convince others to watch.

Once again,Yvonne has been allowed to broadened the character of Sarah. Sarah has become more and more what she has always wanted to be- normal- making silly faces, tearing up when her father is a no-show but still “kicking-ass” when duty calls for it. Yvonne has over the course of the show been able to express a variety of feelings and we “feel” for her. I recall the pilot episode how frightened Chuck was when he flashed on Sarah at the end and saw what a ruthless agent she could be when called upon.

Sarah’s father is right when he too realizes that her “home” is with the “schnook” Chuck. Yes it is fun to pull a con on a con. Lets hope that all the money he left Sarah was from him ripping off other cons and not the innocent.

3 episodes left for season 4. sigh!

Lets all hope that NBC does the right thing and renews Chuck for another season. There is still a lot of stories to be written about Team Bartowski. LYKAON thanks for all you do to promote Yvonne Strahovski in your reviews. You comments speak for many of us.

Gary Cole really brings out the best in Yvonne. Probably my favorite episode with her all year. She’s a great actress all the time, but really shines when she’s with Gary.

Apr 18, 2011 @ 10:46 pm eshley

this episode made us see how great having Chuck around.. wish there could be another season…

Apr 19, 2011 @ 12:16 am Jason S. S.

A really fun episode, probably the best one in Season 4 so far. Always a pleasure to see Zachary and Yvonne get a chance to truly showcase their comedic talent. (And thumbs up for Gary Cole, too!) This really reminded me of the older episodes of Chuck that defined the show.

NBC, this is the type of series that doesn’t need big-ass ratings to stay afloat. It already has the critical acclaim, fanbase, sponsorship, DVD sales, international appeal, and pure escapist charm to seal its reputation as a modern TV classic. Don’t let the Bartowski saga go. Even if Chuck lasts just one more season, that would mean a lot for all the Nerd Herders out there.

Sarah & Dad bring out the best acting, we need to see Gary Cole return more. Casey & Kat hit home. This show like the best of S2. Best comedy with lots of backstory, kudos to the writers. My Fav of the season. Yvonne & Gary make it seem real

GREAT episode! The first 20 minutes almost made me choke on my own laugh =) Faking a flash is EPIC! I’ll be looking forward for the bloopers from that scene. The scene at the dance floor is so heart melting, the music playing on cue; at last by Etta James which was also used in the movie “Father of the bride”, a very classic homage to one of the sweetest scenes from a movie, now on CHUCK! Now where do I get a piggy bank with that much money? in Pink! Strong episode! ACES!

Great episode! A lot of funny moments, everybody was great!
Really like the song at the end, Alexander is a great singer/songwriter.

Give this one an A+. It had everything we have come to want and expect from a Chuck show and most importantly plenty of Yvonne.

Apr 19, 2011 @ 3:17 pm DonH

I agree with everyone’s comments. Lykaon’s review was right on. All of the comments to this episode are all positive and I can’t think of anything to add. I agree 100% the episode is A+. There has been comments lately about the writing but this episode is fantastic. It had all of the things that make Chuck so successful. I also like the stand alone episodes also. I agree that that type of episode allows for people to tune in and enjoy the episode and hopefully get hooked on the show. I hope the remaining shows will be as great as this one was. Lastly, I hope the audience number will rebound back to 1.8 to 2.0 as the show richly deserves. With 3 episodes left I will continue to hope for the best for a season5. I am amazed how little promotion is done for our show.

I loved the episode.

Apr 19, 2011 @ 6:44 pm fej1099

I thought i was watching season 2 or 3 yesterday loved it. I agree not very much Promotion from NBC on this. I was upset by yesterdays rating. lets keep pulling for season 5 and beyond. SAVE CHUCK

Apr 20, 2011 @ 6:55 am Greg

Definitely an A+ episode….very funny. Yvonne “flashing” was hilarious….there was only 1 “negative” for me….there was no conclusion to the wedding planner con artist. After they found her, they seemed to let her disappear….I would have thought they would have worked with Dad to con her out of the money. Loved the “adventure money” at the end….perfect ending. Really getting excited about the wedding….I think it’s going to be fun. Might be a good time to let Ellie know what Chuck really does….

Well, I’m with all of you. This episode had that ‘nice’ season 2 feel to it. I loved the whole thing, top to bottom. Judkins and LeFranc seem to have hit their stride with this ep. Hoping for more of the same in season 5 (‘married with missions’). Let us pray that NBC’s pilots are not that great and there is still room for a show like CHUCK in the schedule. I would be very happy for a 13 ep season 5 where S&F are told right up front that this is it and they plan accordingly. Wouldn’t it be great to have that great big happy ending where everything is all tied up neatly and the scene is set for the first CHUCK movie? Much better than having to wait until May sweeps to learn our fate.

While we’re waiting, go to the WB online store http://www.wbshop.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-WB-Site/default/Page-ContactUs and ask how to preorder the ‘CHUCK Score Soundtrack’ by Tim Jones. Maybe we can nudge them into making the CD set release a priority.

Apr 20, 2011 @ 8:30 pm Big Paulie

The shot of Daphne Peralta being swept up in the net on the side of the freeway ranks as the funniest moment ever on Chuck. Except for all the other funniest moments ever on Chuck…

:)

Apr 20, 2011 @ 9:32 pm justafan

Great episode! Yvonne really shined. She had a lot of screen time. Just the way we like it, right!?! She’s really becoming funny. It’s a side of her I hope they expand on if we get a season 5.

I don’t know if anyone else caught this but during the scene when they we discussing the guest list, if you freeze frame it you can see that Josh Schwartz is invited but I didn’t see Chris Fedak’s name. Just a little Chuck humor I guess. (good trivia tidbit)

It was great to see a stand alone ep but with little time remaining, there’s so much to rap up in such a short time, I hope the last ep isn’t so crammed with stuff that it looks rushed. LONG LIVE CHUCK!!!!

How came 2 of the world´s best spies can´t barely afford their own weading? … They probably spent it all on Sarah´s new ride ^^

Apr 25, 2011 @ 3:05 pm jj sarahchuckfan

Awesome ep!

From the “still in Burbank with the Schnook” to Sarah’s Flashface to Sarah and Chuck conning Gen.Beckman “Chuck, did u just flash?” to Casey “netting” Daphne on the side of the highway to the Intersect and the Zephyr, to Casey seeing his wife, this was a Season1 and 2 style classic.

Also, what a ride Sarah drives! Thanks to all who let us know what the sportscar is.

Btw, in the prior ep, the pre-nup document listed Sarah Lisa Walker as the name. Chuck knows her first and middle names!

NBC has to renew us for a Season5 and Sarah’s family have to show for the wedding.

Awesome idea about a Chuck movie.

Apr 26, 2011 @ 10:23 am Bill

@jj sarahchuckfan What ever happened to the name “Sam” that Sarah said her real name was way back when?

Apr 26, 2011 @ 4:03 pm nuxi

@bill

To be honest, I think the writters just got into a deadlock with that “Sam” thing. On Chuck vs the Wookie, Chuck asks for Sarah´s middle name and, I think we all remember that, she whispered “Lisa” as her “real” middle name.
Now let´s see, when I saw that I first thought she was being honest. I mean, she got to be honest, she didn´t said it out loud to Chuck or whatever, why would she be lying by whispering to herself the name Lisa?!

But now we get to see that she goes as Sarah Lisa Walker.
Well, that´s her spy name! supposedly, not her real one.
Unless, her spy name and real one both share Lisa as her middle name, though that would be awkward. She´s a spy but still her cover keeps a part of her real name?

I don´t know how deep we´ll go on Sarah´s names, as far as her true identity is concerned, at least this season. I just hope they don´t mess around with these little details that we, Chuck fans, are attentive too, and, in the end, may everything fit together naturally. :D

Go Chuck! :P

Apr 27, 2011 @ 11:11 am Ace

To Lykaon, it’s the first time i’ve read your reviews, I must say you do good reviews, you cover everything and do not leave a single stone unturned

I HOPE THERE WILL BE CHUCK SEASON 5, i read that even if Chuck gets season 5, it will be Chuck vs 12 New Shows

I’m sure genius man Chris Fedak still have stories up on his Intersect….

May 1, 2011 @ 4:59 pm jj sarahchuckfan

@bill, @nuxi:

sounds like u are both right.
In Season1, Sarah mentioned “Lisa” as her middle name.
In Season3, Sarah said “Sam” or Samantha as her real name.

I just meant since her name was listed as “Sarah Lisa Walker”
on the pre-nup document,
that Chuck and everyone / us knows that her real name includes
“Samantha Lisa” since “Lisa” was listed on the pre-nup, and
Chuck / everyone heard Sarah tell Shaw her name is “Sam”.

The writers could use this in a story arc, since Chuck played it cool and just signed the pre-nup.

I vote for Kim Basinger to show as Sarah’s Mom or Aunt for the wedding, Carrie Underwood as Sarah’s sister.

Looks like Ellie will find out Chuck is still in the spy game w/the Intersect in the next ep. Will she upload the 2.0?

May 2, 2011 @ 5:36 pm Bill

@jj sarahchuckfan I wouldn’t jump to conclusion that Sam is short for Samantha. And certainly she did put Sarah Lisa Walker on the pre-nup. I was just curious if the writers had forgotten about Sam or at least the writer(s) for this episode.

I have another thought. The writers seem to like to make references to other shows, songs, etc. from time to time. Perhaps was a play on “Silk Stockings” where both male and female detectives called each other Sam instead of their real names.
